What are the day to day activities of a van driver? 

A van driver will be expected to deliver goods to people’s homes and businesses on a given timescale, so for instance if you are working for delivery company like DHL you will load your van with the goods for your local area, have a pre-planned route and follow that route delivering items like flat screen televisions, fridges, cookers, clothes and lots of other goods direct to customers homes and businesses. In many cases with companies like DHL a signature will be required from the customer that they have collected the goods. 

The day to day role breakdown: 

·         Planning the days delivery route 

·         Vehicle check – making sure the van is road worthy for example checking tyre pressure. 

·         Expected to load the van with goods to deliver – usually end of each day or early morning. 

·         Full records of all deliveries – you need to log each delivery as this will be passed onto customers for their reference, failing to do this may lead to disciplinary action. 

·         Required to obtain signatures of customers for each delivery. 

What are the requirements to become a van driver? 

Here is a breakdown of the basic requirements that need to be met, some employers may expect relevant experience, and certifications etc but this is usually stated in the job description for that particular vacancy. 

·         Being professional and punctual at all times (some companies now require there van drivers to wear uniforms). 

·         Clean driving license and excellent driving skills. 

·         Trust – as you will be delivering in many cases expensive goods a high level of trust in you will be required, so many don’t look favourably on those who have criminal convictions. 

·         Excellent communication skills and interpersonal abilities. 

·         Good knowledge of the area and ability to read maps and use technology to assist you in planning routes. 

·         The ability to work under pressure and commit to meeting tight time schedules. 

·         Health and Safety – As you maybe loading and unloading heavy goods it is important you are aware of the healthy and safety risk so many employers require there staff to attend the Manual driving course which will help van drivers on how to prevent injury while lifting heavy goods.

But if you will be working as a security van driver then you will need an SIA license and will be required to complete the National Open College Network Level 2 course which gives you the required skills and knowledge required to transport cash and valuables.
