Did You Know?
This
business operates over 5,380 stores across 14 different markets in Asia, Europe and the United
States.
But why would you need to know the
background of the company?
From our
experience only 2% of applicants bother reading up on a company’s background before applying this rises to
around 25% when they have been invited for an interview. So you can see that the vast majority don’t even bother
to read up on a company they are hoping to work for! Not a great start, employers look for signs one of which is
how interested are you in the job? – This is determined by the job application i.e. when relating your
experience withier it be from a similar job or any other experience, the employer will look to see how this
person fits into my team and Tesco.
So let’s
break it down from the start:
Heres a
short story from Joanne a single mom looking to go back into work.
Joanne is
a single mom who used to work at Asda as a supermarket assistant she was forced to give up her job because of
her personal problems and relocation from her old house.
Joanne has
since moved from her old house and the kids have gone back to school, she has lots of spare time in the day and
wouldn’t mind taking on a new job. She remembers the time she worked at ASDA and that it was a great job meeting
new people each day and she feels she could easily do the same job again. So Joanne starts searching, there is a
new job vacancy that has just become available at her local Tesco store that fits her skills and experience.
Joanne is very excited and gets hold of her old CV but this doesn’t have her experience at ASDA listed. – Now
each job vacancy Joanne applies for will have different criteria each supermarket chain will hold different
values and work ethics. Some supermarket assistants will be required to do back office work take on more
responsibilities (all of which are listed in the job description). That’s why a bespoke CV is needed for each
job you apply for! And if you already know about the companies values you would be able to relate to them when
explaining how your experience relates to this job vacancy and how you would be a great fit within the
company.

Tesco Compared to the other big
supermarket chains:
In terms
of market share Tesco is the by far the leader but what about the other big supermarkets? Let’s compare
them:
1. Tesco
2. ASDA
3. Sainsburys
4. Morrisons
History and Founder of
Tesco
Tesco was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen who began selling
basic groceries from a stall in East London.
Did You Know?
When Jack
Cohen opened his stall at Wall Street Market on the first day he sold £4 worth of groceries and his profit out
of that was £1, a huge difference to the 21st century Tesco he founded in 1919!
1924 saw
Jack sell his first own branded product, the product was called “Tesco Tea” the name Tesco comes from Jack’s
surname and one of the partners of the tea firm TE Stockwell. Five years later after introducing his own branded
tea Jack opened his fist supermarket store in Burnt Oak, Edgware, North London. The company continued to expand
and in 1932 Jack decided to convert Tesco stores Limited into a private limited company.
Two years
after the company became a private limited company, Jack brought a large plot of land on Angel Road, Edmonton in
North London. This new plot of land would become the company’s headquarters and warehouse, the first of its kind
in the United Kingdom and something which transformed the way supermarket chains transport food to
stores.

In 1947
Tesco Holdings was floated on the London Stock Exchange with a share price of 25 pence. 1956 saw the first self
service Tesco supermarket store open, this was opened in a converted cinema in Maldon. And a year later the
Tesco Group acquired 70 stores from rival chain Williamsons and another 200 stores from Harrow stores. In 1960
the company acquired 212 stores from Irwin’s Stores beating rivals Express Dairies Premier Supermarkets to the
deal. Four years after acquiring 212 stores from rival supermarket chain Irwin’s Tesco’s went onto acquiring a
further 97 stores from Charles Phillips group of stores.
Did You Know?
Jack’s
motto was "pile it high and sell it cheap" and the supermarket chains current motto is “Every little helps!”
The
supermarket chain continued to expand had already amassed a portfolio of over 800 stores across the United
Kingdom. In 1987 Tesco completed their very hostile takeover of rival supermarket chain Hillards, costing the
group around £220 million.
Expansion into
Scotland
The
company was quickly becoming the dominant force in the supermarket sector in England but in Scotland Tesco was
lacking far behind other rival supermarket chains but in 1994 this was to change with successful acquirement of
William Low as a part of the deal Tesco took over 57 stores, they beat of stiff competition from Sainsburys and
this established Tesco in Scotland.
Today and the
Future
The
21st century saw Tesco continue to expand across the UK and started to develop its offshore business
with stores under different names as well as the Tesco name being opened in the United States, Japan, China and
India. The company now has stores in Asia, Europe and America.
But even
though the company has expanded into other countries their main focus remains the United Kingdom which accounts
for the majority of revenue that the group generates.
Tesco as
of 2011 is preparing to create a whopping 10,000 new Tesco Jobs in the UK to cover for the busy
festive season.
Tesco is
also continue to expand in other sectors and now offers clothes, electronics, financial services, telecoms,
home, health, car, dental and pet insurance, retailing and renting DVDs, music downloads, Internet services and
software.
