Poundland
Poundland are a discount store chain operating across the UK and
one of the first retail stores to sell all items in there store for £1. The company are also recognised for
being among the first to bring this type of retailing to Europe which was first invented in the USA in the
1870’s.
Poundland
are currently the largest “single price” discount chain in Europe with revenue of £396 million and a profit of
£11.8 million.
The
company claims there Croydon pound store is the busiest in the world with around 30,000 customers walking
through their doors each week, which generates over £9 million per year in revenue for the single priced
discount chain.
The History and Founder of
Poundland
Poundland
was first founded by Dave Dodd and Stephen Smith in April 1990, they opened there first store in Octagon Centre
in Burton upon Trent. By 1991 Poundland operated six stores and
continued to rapidly expand across many cities in the UK.
The
company opened a new 130,000 square feet warehouse to cope with new demand the company was facing and because
the old warehouse had exceeded its capacity. The company operate in excess of 150 Poundland stores across the UK
with targets of opening at least 30 new stores per year.
The
company invested around £25 million in constructing a new 300,000 square feet distribution centre to improve
product distribution across the network of stores. The company envisage building the chain into operating over
400 stores in the UK and operate a list of schemes including recycling old mobiles and supports many charities.
Once the new distribution centres was built and running hundreds of new Poundland Jobs were created.

When Dave Dodd and Stephen Smith founded Poundland they
only had a starting capital of £50,000 and were finding it difficult to rent a store as many landlords
believed there business would destroy other local business by undercutting them.
Poundland
have continued their expansion and are one of the very few retail businesses still doing well in economic
downturn, the company even reported increased sales since the start of the recession as more and more consumers
become price wary and look for cheaper options. Poundland’s competitors haven’t ignored this report with
supermarket chain Asda announcing they were too going to reduce their prices of well known brands that were
being offered by Poundland to just a pound most notably Colgate Toothpaste and shower gels.
The
company went through a management buy-out by Advent International in 2002 led by Dave Dodd, this allowed the
company to rapidly expand creating new jobs across the United Kingdom. James McCarthy was taken over as the
chief executive of Poundland from Dave Dodd, James came from being the chief executive of Sainsburys
PLC.

simplicity of the retail chains pricing has made it a real attractions for consumers who love the “one price”
concept, which goes for the company’s catch phrase: “everything’s a pound”.

Currently
Poundland are supporting the Macmillan Cancer Support charity and have run 2 fundraisers (time of writing) one
of which was named “c’mon England” in support of the football World Cup and the other fundraiser which was
called “Summer of Love” which was to celebrate the season of summer.
The retail
chain is also a member of Sedex (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) and has been awarded the fourth spot in
Europe’s 500 Award which was for the year of 2010, the company created hundreds of new jobs at their Poundland
stores and distribution centre which helped gain this award. Poundland also came 11th in the Sunday
Times Top Track 250.
