The company was founded in 1864 by a man called Joseph Hepworth he called his
business “Joseph Hepworth & Son” and operated as a tailor.
The company later on in 1982 bought “Kendall & Sons Ltd” a women fashion retailer based in Leister so
they could enter the expanding women’s fashion industry.

The company after purchasing Kendall & Sons Ltd went through a redevelopment and rebranding faze and
introduce a new style of retail stores this was brought in by George Davies who was the Chief Executive of the
company and in 1984 moved all the retail stores under the company to the new Next concept.
In 1984 Next introduced Men’s clothing range inline with the same concept as with women’s clothes.
This new concept worked brilliantly as the average customer was buying around 3 to 5 items
compared to single items sales before the buyout.
In 1986 the company moved there headquarters from the location where they were first founded (Leeds) to
there current location Leister.
They carried on their expansion in the 80’s and 90’s and have now in operation over 400 stores nationwide
with a seasonal catalogue and a very popular online store.
