The company has gained major success mainly due to the prices and variety of fashion designs the retailer has to offer with many prices 10 to 15 percent lower than main rivals Etam and Marks and Spencers. But in recent years the company has seen their market sector become increasingly competitive with new value discount chains offering cut-priced clothing such as Matalan and Mark One but not only this supermarkets have also entered the sector to offer their customers an “all-in-one” supermarket one of the big 4 supermarkets that have adopted this approach is ASDA who with their popular George brand offer a similar cut priced clothing line to New Look but maybe not as extensive.

The History and Founder of New Look 

The company was founded in 1969 by Tom Singh (a Sikh man originally from India’s Punjab state) who’s parents emigrated from India to the United Kingdom in the 1930’s and opened up a drapery store in Somerset and gradually built up a small chain of retail outlets.  

Tom Singh followed his parents into retail and opened his first store in Weymouth, Dorset. He borrowed £5,000 from his parents to help fund is initial start up costs.  He named is new retail store “New Look” which sold women’s garments that Tom brought from the Middle and Far East allowing his shoppers a good variety of choice and cut down prices.  

The company continued to expand in the 1980’s opening a new store every 9 to 12 months and Tom Singh was joined by his wife and brother-in-law to help run the business. By 1989 the company had built up a chain of 46 stores in the United Kingdom and in the same year the business brought in Gavin Aldred as joint managing director with Tom Singh notably the first non family member to take up a prominent position within the company.  

A year later the company had expanded to around 70 stores and with five years New Look became a nationally operating retail chain with over 200 stores in operation. 

The company now operates over 1000 stores in over 13 countries with the majority of their stores in the UK and employ a staggering 30,000 staff.
