Morrisons are a Public limited company with the company on the London stock exchange since 1967, currently listed as a FTSE 100 index company.

The supermarket chain has a market share of 11.8% making the supermarket chain the fourth largest with Sainsburys with 16% market share, Asda with 16.8% market share and Tesco with 30.9% of the UK market share, ahead of Morrisons.

Morrisons was first founded in 1899 by a man called William Morrison and started of as a small egg and butter stall which was located in Rawson Market in Bradford. William Morrison’s son Ken Morrison took over the business in 1952 at the age of 26 he later went onto open a small self service store with 3 counters which was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom.

But Morrisons got major coverage and broke headlines when in 2004 they bought Safeway a UK based supermarket chain operating over 400 stores across Scotland and the South of England. This was a big move for Morrisons as it showed there intention of expanding across the UK and wanted to compete at a higher level with the likes of ASDA, Tesco and Sainsburys. But the takeover quickly fell into problems with the legacy accounting system being changed six weeks before Morrisons officially takeover which led to financial problems and Morrisons forecasting huge losses and had to revert to manual account logging.

Many stores were sold off or deals were done with companies like BP, Tesco and ASDA but Morrisons did retain quite a few stores. With the remaining stores Morrisons converted them to there own Brand and within a few weeks signs and shopping bags had been replaced with there own brand.

Currently Morrisons is the 4^th largest supermarket in the United Kingdom with 124,000 on Morrisons Jobs. With just over 11% of the market share less then half of what Tesco have.
