Job Application Cover Letter:

I have been a chef for the past 7 years and I am looking for a change. I have no experience in this type of job role but I am a very quick learner and very rarely need to be shown things twice. I am very easy to get along with and am dedicated to doing the best at my job. I would much appreciate if a manager could give me a call for a further chat. Many thanks

Both job applications above were rejected the first job application as you see does not even qualify for being a sentence never mind a paragraph, we understand that some may not be able to write an essay as they aren’t applying to become and editor for a newspaper just applying for shop assistant role etc. But withier your looking to become a retail assistant a delivery driver or a store manager the basics are the same if you have to fill in a cover letter there is a reason why. A cover letter needs to contain the following basics see our below checklist:

1.     Why I am taking the time to apply for this job? I.e. what interest you in this job vacancy?

2.     This brings you straight onto the second point: What can I offer the company? – Skills and experience from previous jobs, school etc.

3.     List the last two jobs relating to the job vacancy your applying for.

4.     And if possible notice period required.

The above are the basics and it will depend on the job you are applying for and what you may need to expand on. We recommend that a cover letter should be at least a paragraph long though it will vary from job to job.

House of Fraser History and Founder

House of Fraser JobsThe company was founded in 1849 by Hugh Fraser and his partner James Arthur starting of trading curtains in a small shop on Argyle Street in Glasgow. Hugh started off as an apprentice at Stewart & McDonald Ltd who specialised in Drapery distribution from there Glasgow based warehouse. Hugh brought of many of his first customers from his old employers where he become a warehouse manager before opening his own business.

James Arthur already owned a separate outlet in the same market selling similar products which he managed before hiring a manager to look after the business so he could work with Hugh Fraser on their new venture together. They called there new business “Arthur and Fraser”.

In the 1850’s to the 1860’s the founders hired external managers to help run there expanding business first hiring Thomas Kirkpatrick and then Alexander McLaren but in 1865 the founders of Arthur and Fraser decided that it was time to part ways with James Arthur taking over the wholesale side of the business and Hugh Fraser taking full control of the retail arm of the business. Hugh Fraser had already by this point decided who he was going to partner up with to continue expanding his retail business and in the same year just after the partnership between James Arthur and High Fraser was dissolved Alexander McLaren joined Hugh’s retail arm of the business. The retail business was then renamed from the original “Arthur and Fraser” to “Fraser and McLaren” in line with the new partnership.

Hugh Fraser died in 1873 leaving his three sons to take over the running of the business, his three sons were: James Fraser, John Fraser and his youngest son Hugh Fraser (named after him). The two older sons James and John were directors at the company and brought in Alexander McLaren and John Towers to manage the day to day operational running of the business. 1891 saw the youngest of the three sons also join the business and the company was again renamed this time to Fraser & Sons.

Hugh Fraser II was in full control of the business by 1909 and listed the business as Limited company and the company was now called Fraser & Sons Ltd. Hugh passed away in 1927 leaving his son in charge Hugh Fraser III who was an accountant by trade but took the business to new heights with the opening of new departments a restaurant and the takeover of two competing retailers in 1936 this was completed and the acquired companies were Arnott & Co Ltd and Robert Simpson & Sons Ltd. The company again went through a name change and was renamed to its current day name “House of Fraser” and Hugh Fraser III took the business out of private ownership and made its debut on the London Stock Exchange in 1948.
