What does a delivery driver do?

Courses a Delivery Driver can do

Delivery Driver JobsSome companies may require certain prerequisites to be fulfilled i.e. many employers are interested in delivery drivers who are fully qualified and hold or some of the following certifications:

·          SAFED Certification Course.
This course helps drivers prevent possible accidents from occurring and allows for more fuel efficient driving.

·          HIAB Certification Course.
Required for those who will be driving a vehicle that has a mounted crane, the course will cover all Health and Safety requirements under the Safe Use of Lifting Equipment 1998 (ACOP) LOLER Regulations.

·          Manual Driving Course.
This course is not only undertaken by delivery drivers but also others who will be involved in lifting heavy items, the course aims to prevent injuries and shows you how to adhere to health and safety guidelines.

·          ADR Certification Course (“Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route”)
The ADR qualification is a mandatory certification which needs to be undertaken by delivery drivers who will be transporting dangerous and hazardous goods in the United Kingdom.

Delivery drivers under the following classes will need to attend this course:
Class 1 Explosives

Class 2 Gases

Class 3 Flammable Liquids

Class 4 Flammable solids

Class 5 Oxidisers Organic Peroxides

Class 6 Toxics / Infectious

Class 7 Radioactive
Class 8 Corrosive
Class 9 Miscellaneous

·          Digital Tachograph Training.
The qualification is now a legal requirement in the United Kingdom for delivery drivers who will be driving HGV type vehicles. Attending this course who will increase your chances in landing a jobs with a potential new employer as otherwise companies have to fork out hundreds of pounds to send their drivers on this course.

What’s Average Wage for a Delivery Driver?

Now this depends on the job you do if you are a dangerous goods driver i.e. drive a petrol tanker then you can expect to earn in the region of £30,000 to £45,000 per annum, due to the added risk and extra training that is required to drive this vehicle. On the other hand if you are a delivery driver for DPD or Home Delivery Network you can expect to earn the minimum wage or just above the minimum wage - that’s if you’re a local delivery driver, delivering goods to homes and businesses on a van. Van drivers can expect to earn anywhere from £10,000 to £19,000 in the West Midlands but the same job can bring earnings of around £13,000 to £23,000 in areas such as London. HGV drivers will earn the most as delivery drivers due to the risk and hours being worked.

Job Role: Transporting Goods on a HGV Class 2 vehicle.
Salary: £22,000 to £40,000
