Debenhams retail chain that operates just over 160 outlets as a department store business selling products which
include: Fashion Clothing, Shoes, Accessories, Cosmetics, Home Furniture, Electricals and toys.
The
company are listed on the London Stock Exchange and are a constitute of the FTSE 250 Index, the company employ
over 24,000 people and have revenues in excess of £2 billion.
The
business has their headquarters in London and the current Chief Executive of Debenhams is Rob
Templeman.
The History and Founder of
Debenhams
The company was founded in 1778 by Messrs Flint and Clark who opened there
first outlet in London (44 Wigmore Street to be precise) and named there store “Flint & Clark”. William
Debenham joined as a partner in 1813 and the company was renamed to Clark and Debenham. With the new invested
from William Debenham the company opened there second store 5 years later in Cheltenham. Debenhams Limited
became the official name in 1905.
In 1919
the company went through a transitional phase as it tried to build a market share across the United Kingdom
through a variety of acquisitions the very first being under the leadership of the then Chairmen, Ernest
Debenham. Under his leadership Debenhams acquired Marshall & Snelgrove on Oxford street in London. A year
later the company acquired Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, London. The stores acquired were kept under there
original name until the company was to be listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1928 when all acquired
businesses were rebranded as Debenhams.

History
1985 Saw
Debenham be taken over by The Burton Group, the company was demerged from The Burton Group and once again listed
on the London Stock Exchange as a separate company. 2003 saw the company open its largest store in the UK in the
Bullring (Birmingham) after 20 years of closing there last store in Birmingham due to a decline in
sales.
