Currys History and
Founder
The retailer was founded in 1884 by Henry Curry
who started off by selling bicycles from his shed in his garden as demand grew he opened his first shop on 271
Belgrave Gate, Leicester, England. The first shop was opened in 1888. And as demand grew Henry Curry moved
into larger stores in 1890 to 296 Belgrave Gate and then in 1900 to 285-287 Belgrave Gate combining three
shops into one. Henry Curry carried onto run a successful business and brought his sons into the business with
new company called H. Curry & Sons. And in 1927 the sons and Henry had started to sell a range of goods
from their stores including toys and radios they then decided to float the business on the London Stock
Exchange.
Dixons Acquire Currys in 1984
Dixons took over Currys in 1984 but kept the Currys brand but in 2006 the Dixons
Store Group decided to rebrand all there Dixons stores to Currys.Digital apart from duty free stores in airports
and in Ireland where the Dixons name would be continued to be used.
Currys Today
Currys have become a household brand with a large advertisement budget and exposure
the company is the leading home appliance and electronics retailer in the United Kingdom and as Currys are a part
of the Dixons store group they have teamed up with PC World (another
Dixons Store Group company) to sell computers and other electronics under one roof
combining the two business into one has paid dividends so far to the two businesses.
Working at Currys – Is it a career?
This really depends on the role you take on for instance if you take on a Currys Job
as a Sales Assistant you need to have good communication skills and enjoy interacting with new people each day,
being able to sell products advise customers of offers and products they may be interested in and having an
interest in electronics would be a must. Though some sales people can sell anything even they don’t really have an
interest in the product they are selling the majority of us really need to like the technology/product before we
can create a commanding sales pitch to potential customers.
But if you take a job at Currys as a delivery driver then it wouldn’t matter if you
worked for Comet, Homebase, Sainsburys or Next the same skill set would apply and though there may be slight
variations like uniforms, size of goods to be transported your overall job description would no
different.
A career at Currys like any other retailer is not for people
who are not willing to put in the work and interested in offering the very best every time as this industry is very
fast paced and keeping on your toes is a must – if you can do this then what are you waiting for apply for Currys
jobs now!
Currys offer a delivery service and also an optional installation service for an
additional charge where the Currys delivery drivers can come and install the product for you.
Currys also offer a “Reserve and Collect” Service where customers can reserve
products online and purchase them in store.
The Company currently employ over 10,700 people and have 368 stores of which 73 are
high street stores and 295 “out of town” super stores.
Main Competitors in the United Kingdom:
Comet (Direct Competitors on the high street)
Supermarket chains like Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda who have started to stock
electronics equipment has made it a hard market to compete in as these retailers quickly slash prices and make it
easier for customers to shop from one place cutting out retailers like Currys and Comet.

Jason worked at Currys Digital in Leeds
Boring! About sums up my time at the store. There were new
gadgets but all your doing is walking around the store and during the weekdays it wasn't busy so your just
standing around. Not my kind of job!

Becky worked at Currys Store in Birmingham
Enjoyed it a lot, had a great time! The only problem i found was
career progression you don't really get a lot of assistance if you want to get it another job or further your
career. Though my team was great and the store manager and my team leader were very supportive and
friendly.
